2 May – Flag Day of the Republic of Poland

Flag Day of the Republic of Poland, celebrated on 2 May, is one of the youngest public holidays, which since 2004 commemorates the importance of Polish national colours and national symbols. Although it is not a day off from work, in social awareness it gained an important place as an opportunity to demonstrate attachment to national tradition and national identity.

On that day White-red flag It flies on all ships of the Polish Navy, as well as on masts of land units of the armed forces. This shows respect for national symbols and underlines the importance of armed forces – especially Polish Navy – apply to heritage and national pride. It is also a reminder that the Polish flag is not just a symbol – for many it is a daily part of the service at sea, often in difficult operating conditions and away from the native coast.

Traditionally, many Poles decide to hang a flag in front of the house, on a balcony or in a window – it is a gesture that becomes more common every year. Increasingly Popular It also becomes the wearing of a national bow that President Lech Kaczyński initiated. It is a modest but significant form of tribute to Polish history.

May 2 is also Polish and Polish Day for the Border, established as a tribute to the contribution of Poles living outside the country in the fight for independence and their commitment to cultivating Polishness. For sailors and soldiers serving outside Poland, especially those stationed on ships operating under allied obligations, this day has an additional dimension – it is an opportunity to manifest unity with the nation, regardless of where they are currently located.

White-red colours, according to the bill on the emblem, colours and anthem of the Republic of Poland, refer to the heraldic colours of the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Their symbolism is deeply rooted in the history of national pursuits of freedom, the struggle for sovereignty and unification. The flag remains one of the most important signs of national unity – visible both in times of triumph and in difficult moments.

In this context, it is worth recalling that, as in the case of many countries, including our allies from the United States, it is the national flag that should be the only one that blows at state institutions and private homes – not only during national holidays. Showing international solidarity is important and necessary, but it should not obscure the symbols of the identity of its own people. Polish flag is a sign of our history, sovereignty and state continuity – and it should unite all citizens, regardless of the current geopolitical situation.
