8. Coast Defense Flotilla will neutralize the bomb monster "Tallboy"

In mid-October, the 8th Coast Defence Fleet will begin neutralizing the Tallboy bomb, lying at the bottom of the Piast Canal in Świnoujście. It's one of the largest air bombs that were dropped during World War II.
The Tallboy bomb with a total weight of 5,400 kilograms was discovered during in-depth work on the Świnoujście-Szczecin water track in September 2019. The 8th Coast Defence Flotillas cleared the waterway from smaller unexploded explosions and worked together with scientists from Poznan University of Technology on the safest concept of bomb neutralization – reported the West Pomeranian provincial press service on Friday.
"The bomb will be neutralized by deflagration, that is, firing explosive at the location of the find," said the director of the Department of Security and Crisis Management of the provincial office Paweł Rodzoś. "This method also requires specialized preparation of the facility, so the entire action will take several days. So far, it is the largest action of this kind in Poland to neutralize post-war explosions" - he added.
The special safety rules for the action will apply to the Gaz-System, the LNG Terminal and the Świnouska Shipping. Safety zones on land and on the Szczecin Basin, water tracks and adjacent water neutralisation sites will be designated.
Evacuation zones for residents of Świnoujście will also be developed. Due to the size of the cargo and the size of the security zones, representatives of the German side were also invited to cooperate.
The Tallboy found may be one of the bombs that were dropped in 1945 on the German battleship Lutzow, then in the Świnouian port.
