81st anniversary of the outbreak of World War II in Świnoujście

The ceremony began at 11 a.m. in Slavic Square. Flowers and wreaths at the monument "The Heroes of the Battle for Independence of the Republic" were made by delegations of the 8th Coast Defence Fleet, headed by the 8th FOW Rear Admiral Piotr Nieć. Representatives of local local authorities, uniformed services, combatants, scouts and school children also offered tribute to the fallen. After the celebrations in Slavic Square, the second part of the celebrations was held at the Świnouian municipal cemetery at the "Cath of the Eternal Retirement of Soldiers Deceased in World War II". In the presence of military aid, candles were lit there, wreaths and flowers were laid, and the trumpeter played the signal "Silence".

On September 1, 1939, the Nazi Reich launched a military plan "Fall Weiss" to attack Poland from three sides: west, north and south. The first shots were fired at our border guards at 4:40 p.m. Five minutes later, the Schleswig – Holstein battleship, which entered the port of the Free City of Gdańsk a few days earlier, fired at the Polish military depot on Westerplatte. World War II began.
