American Cruise Lines is developing a national cruise fleet by 2028

On the American market voyageThis tourist is preparing a real revival. The American Cruise Lines (ACL) announced an ambitious Project Blue program, assuming the introduction of ten new units, entirely built in the United States.

The programme includes the construction of river cruisers and smaller coastal units. Voyage inaugural unitsAmerican Pioneer, scheduled for October 31 in Florida, will open a series of deliveries carried out by 2028.

Renaissance of American shipyards – river and coastal cruisers

Although European and Asian shipyards specialising in the construction of cruise ships have dominated for years, Project Blue has a much broader economic dimension. This is a clear signal that the US shipbuilding industry regains its ability to compete in the smaller segment after decades of stagnationpassenger craft, designed for coastal and river shipping. A series of these modern compact cruisers, established in local shipbuilding facilities, can become a strong impetus for the national shipbuilding industry, strengthening the supply chain and involving national co-operators in the construction process.

The assumptions and pace of the program sound impressive: one new unit every four months. However, in the shipbuilding environment, questions arise as to whether such a rapid construction cycle is sustainable. Logistics challenges, shortages of skilled workers and rising steel costs can make the schedule more a promotional material than a hard production plan. However, this does not change the fact that the order of this scale itself constitutes an unprecedented event for American shipyards building small passenger units.

New directions voyageProject Blue

New units will support traditional routes around Mississippi, Alaska and the east coast of the USA. ACL, however, also plans to opencompletely new directions– voyagethe Great Lakes, Arkansas River and the routes connecting cruises with visits to neighboring American national parks. It is a move that expands the offer and fits into the growing trend of intimate theme travel, focusing on close contact with nature and local culture.

The program will create two types of units. The first is a small coastal cruiser seriesPatriot Class, capable of boarding about 130 passengers. They have five decks, private balconies and spacious terraces overlooking the changing landscapes of the American coast. The second type are modern river cruisesAmerican Riverboat, equipped with multi-storey atrium and apartmentsSignature Suitedesigned for 180 passengers. Both types are part of Project Blue, which has previously resulted in the construction of the unitAmerican Patriotwhich took about a year to build and prepare to enter the service — from April 2024 to June 2025.

First routes and further cruises in the American Cruise Lines fleet

As scheduled unitAmerican Pioneerwill start on 31 October 16-day voyage inaugural "Grand Florida Coast & Keys", leading from Amelia Island to St. Petersburg. As reported by the shipowner on platform X, the unit about 5,000 tons of displacement will take 130 passengers aboard and will be the first of ten newly built in the US. The implementation of the program will increase the fleet of American Cruise Lines to 30 units that will fly the flag of the United States.

American Cruise Lines consistently cuts off from the global race for ever-larger and more spectacular mega-travels. Instead, it focuses on the intimacy, domestic production and proximity of the places to which its units reach. It's a strategy., which can be more resistant to market fluctuations and the changing expectations of tourists – which today increasingly focus on authenticity and calmness instead of pistons and splendor.
