On January 19, American missile destroyer USS Donald Cook found himself in the Black Sea waters after crossing the Dardanele Strait. The presence of the unit on this watershed is linked to the implementation of the patrol mission of the waters surrounding Europe and will last for a maximum of 21 days, as indicated by the Montreux Convention.

Having its port of deployment at the naval base in the Spanish Rota USS Donald Cook conducts naval activities in the operational area of the 6th United States Fleet to support US national security interests in Europe.

According to the Montreux Convention signed in July 1936, in which Turkey was granted control of the Bosfor and Dardanele straits, warships of states without a coastline at the Black Sea may be present for up to 21 days.
