American aid to Iranian and Indian sailors in the Persian Gulf

On February 18, the Persian Gulf became the site of a dramatic struggle for the life of the crew of the M/V SHAYESTEH merchant ship, owned by Iran. Flying under the Qatari flag, the unit began to rapidly take on water and sank in a short time. Seven sailors – five Iranians and two Indians – were in immediate danger.

On the sent signalmaydayof a sinking M/V vesselSHAYESTEHimmediately responded units of the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard (US Coast Guard) that carried out an effective rescue operation.

The operation took part – the USS trawlerDeveloper(MCM 6) and USCGC patrol boatClarence Sutphin Jr.(CPC 1147). These ships are stationed in the region as part of the U.S. V Fleet, whose task is to protect shipping routes in the Persian Gulf, especially in the Ormuz Strait area – a strategic point of oil transport.

USSDeveloper, as a mine destroyer, operates in the region due to a potential mine hazard that may pose a risk to commercial and military vessels. USCGCClarence Sutphin Jr.Takes part in missions to secure shipping, combat smuggling and monitor the activities of the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which has in the past taken action against vessels in the region.

With the presence of American forces in the area, they managed to conduct a rapid rescue and safely evacuate the survivors.

The incident occurred in an area of strategic importance, where US naval forces regularly conduct operations to ensure the safety of navigation and monitoring of ship traffic. Despite the tense relationship between Iran and the US, the Americans emphasise that their priority is to save lives at sea, regardless of the nationality of the survivors.

Another U.S. Navy rescue mission in the region

This is not the first time American ships are helping Iranian sailors. Several similar operations have occurred in recent years, which shows that despite geopolitical tensions, cooperation in the field of marine rescue is possible.

U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) published recordings and rescue photos confirming the course of events. For now, it is not known whether Iran will attempt to extract the wreckage of the ship or what the consequences for regional shipping may have. The Tehran authorities have not yet addressed the incident and no official communication has been issued.

Maritime safety in the Persian Gulf

The Persian Gulf is one of the most sensitive waters in the world, where shipping incidents occur regularly. The American military presence aims both to protect the interests of allies and to secure transport routes, especially in the Ormuz Strait area.

Experts stress that the sinking of M/VSHAYESTEHmay be another signal indicating the deteriorating technical condition of the units operating in the region. Many of them are older ships, often operated above standard, which increases the risk of accidents and disasters.

So far, there is no information on the possible actions taken by Iranian maritime services in connection with the incident. However, the U.S. Navy and US Coast Guard emphasize their readiness to respond to similar situations in the future.
