AMW and PGZ Stocznia Wojenna training a new generation of specialists

In the era of intensive modernization of the Navy and the growing ambitions of the Polish shipbuilding industry, the challenge is not merely to obtain new contracts or technologies. Equally important – if not crucial – is the provision of appropriately qualified staff that will be able to implement these projects.

The answer to this challenge is innovative cooperation between PGZ War Shipyard and the Naval Academy in Gdynia, which carries education from the world of theory into the realities of modern production halls.
Shipyard-made engineer
Within the direction of Mechanics and Engineering Machines, the speciality "Technical Support for Ship Production" was created. The curriculum was developed in accordance with the PGZ SW guidelines and adapted to the yard's real needs, rather than based on abstract academic models.
As stressed by Jamal Hamoud, Deputy Technical Director for Production Development at PGZ SW:
This unique base is located right at the main gate of PGZ War Shipyard, although few know about its existence. This comprehensive infrastructure is used by students who, thanks to their practical work with real devices, and not just theory from textbooks, become high-class specialists.
Cooperation is not limited to the role of a patron – specialists from the Shipyard actively participate in the teaching process. President of PGZ SW Marcin Ryngwelski together with Mr Marcin Zacharewicz lecture Theory and Construction of the Ship, while Radosław Cackowski from the design office introduces students into the world of design from concept to 3D models. Such integration of academic knowledge into practice ship industry is now a prerequisite for effective education.
From the manual to the production hall
The strength of this program is direct experience – not only lecturers, but also students. They regularly visit the shipyards, participate in paid holiday practices, have access to modern laboratories and simulators that reflect actual shipbuilding conditions.
The AMW Shipbuilding Operation Department has a unique teaching infrastructure – it is the only laboratory in Poland where students can run and test working ship engines such as Sulzer 6AL20/24, MTU 2000 series, or GTD-350 engine. There they are. complete kits of auxiliary devices – from centrifuges and compressors to on-board gym simulators.
This is not a virtual education, but a practical understanding of the reality of the operation of ship gyms and auxiliary systems. Students are at the disposal of shaft alignment stations, as well as research on injection pumps and injectors. Such extensive facilities allow you to know practically all the key devices and installations present on modern vessels.
Modern shipbuilder – 21st century specialist
We must break the stereotype that the shipbuilding competition is hard, unmodern work. Today the installer, welder or painter is a high-end specialist who supports high-tech devices.

Relatively small occupation groups – especially compared to other technical universities – make maximum use of modern teaching infrastructure and direct contact with experienced practices from the industry, create optimal conditions for the training of top-class specialists. This is particularly important in the context of the implementation of strategic programs for modernization of the Navy, such as the construction of frigates under the Sword Programme or rescue units in the Rescue Programme.
Partnership for the future
The PGZ SW continues to co-create the curriculum. The shipyard also launched a scholarship program for the best students, and AMW specialists support the shipyard with current projects – including numerical calculations (MES), acoustic signatures, or diagnostics of gym equipment.
It is a model of cooperation that already brings tangible results – students of the 2nd and 3rd years have professional internships at the PGZ SW, gaining skills closely tailored to the needs of the modern ship industry.
