US strike on Iranian ships on the Ormuz Strait – what happened at sea

The waters of the Persian Gulf have again become a place of demonstration of force. On the night of 10 to 11 March, the United States Armed Forces carried out a strike on Iranian ships and rocket boats operating near the Strait of Ormuz.

According to information provided by U.S. Central Command, 16 units belonging to the Iranian Navy and naval forces of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps were destroyed. Among them were miners and fast rocket boats. The surgery was Preventive nature – according to intelligence, Iran has prepared actions that could jeopardise shipping on one of the most important oil transport routes in the world.

Preventive impact

Intelligence indicated that Tehran was considering taking action to disrupt shipping in this strategic aquavan. This scenario has been in the analysis of possible escalation of tensions in the Gulf region for years.

The published materials indicate that the ships were destroyed by air strikes. The Communication stresses that the aim was to target units referred to as "mine-laying vessels", i.e. ships intended to set sea mines.

The Strategic Strait of the World

Meaning Ormuz Strait It's hard to overestimate. It is through this narrow reservoir that one of the most important arteries of the transport of energy raw materials in the world runs.

It is estimated that about 20 percent of global oil supplies are transported via this seaway. In practice, this means that any disruption of shipping in this area immediately affects the financial markets and energy security of many countries.

Therefore, attempts to block the Ormuz Strait for years have been considered to be one of the most dangerous scenarios of escalation of the conflict in the Middle East.

Iranian asymmetrical action strategy

Iranian naval forces have been developing for many years the ability to conduct asymmetric activities in Gulf waters. They are based not on large ships, but on numerous small vessels.

These ships include transport and the setting of seamines, rapid attacks on ships and operations near major shipping tracks.

Units of this type are more difficult to detect and can operate among intensive civil navigation. They are therefore an important part of the Iranian maritime strategy in the region.

Sea War in the Middle East

The American impact shows that the current confrontation in the region is increasingly moving to the sea, as we have already written on pages of our portal.

The Ormuz Strait remains one of the most sensitive points in the global energy raw material transport system. Any incident in this area can have effects that go far beyond the theatre itself of war.

Therefore, the destruction of several such ships may have strategic significance – especially if they were prepared for an operation that could paralyze one of the world's most important shipping routes.
