BAE Systems modernizes Australian frigates type Anzac

Australian branch of British BAE Systems modernizes three Anzac-type rocket frigates serving in the Australian Navy. The Royal Australian Navy wants the ships to remain in service until they are replaced by newer Hunter-type frigates.

A third Anzac frigate serving in the Royal Australian Navy just entered the Australian shipyard BAE Systems in Henderson. For the Australian branch of BAE Systems, this is an important moment. Prior to that, HMS Perth and HMS Arunta frigates were taken to the shipyard. The HMAS Anzac unit has now joined them.

In Henderson, units are being upgraded as part of the Australian Mid Life Capability Assurance (AMCAP) program. It is implemented by an international consortium of maritime companies operating under the name Warship Asset Management Agreement Alliance. Agreement between the Australian Government and the consortium was signed in April 2016, and entered into force on July 1, 2016. The first order worth $200 million was awarded to the branch of BAE Systems. In total, however, the value of the works that the entire consortium will perform is valued at over $2 billion. The consortium includes the following companies: BAE Systems Australia, Saab Australia, Naval Ship Management, Commonwealth of Australia.

The BAE Systems company stated in its communication that the frigate HMAS Anzac would be the second ship in order to be upgraded. The work includes, among others, the replacement of ventilation system, the renovation and modernization of engines, full replacement of communication systems, the replacement of radar tracking flying objects.

BAE Systems emphasizes that advanced work is currently being carried out in Henderson on HMAS Arunta's rocket frigate. Recently it was dismantled her old one you have, thus gaining space needed to install a new radar system. The new one is currently produced by BAE Systems, and its assembly is scheduled for the end of October. The Australian company CEA Technologies is responsible for developing a new aircraft tracking radar. The British company reports that the modernization of the HMAS Arunta ship will end by the end of this year after spending more than 12 months in a dry dock. By the time the ship returns to service, it will still have to successfully undergo sea trials.
