BAE Systems launched the fifth Astute submarine for the Royal Navy

21.04. was the launching of a submarine HMS Anson. It is the fifth of seven built for the Royal Navy submarines type Astute. The inauguration was a special moment for the shipyard in Barrow, which celebrates the 150th anniversary of its existence and long and fruitful cooperation with the Royal Navy.
HMS Anson with an atomic drive, displaces 7800 tons in immersion, reaches a length of 97 metres and a width of 11.3 metres, will now begin another test phase that will allow the unit to enter service before leaving Barrow next year and undergo sea trials from the Royal Navy.
According to Steve Timms, Managing Director of BAE Systems, launching is an important milestone in Astute's program, and Anson's sight entering the water in such advanced condition is a tangible proof of the hard work of all builders over the past years. The design and construction of nuclear-powered submarines is a national venture, and days like this bring great pride to workers and partners involved in the British supply chain.
Astute ships are the largest and most advanced submarines ever built for the Royal Navy. The 97 metres long ships can orbit the Earth's sphere in immersion, producing their own oxygen and drinking water.
First four submarines of this type: HMS Astute, HMS Ambush, HMS Artful and HMS Audacious, have already been donated to the Royal Navy, and another two units are currently being built.
BAE Systems, working with the Submarine Delivery Agency and Rolls-Royce, is also a member of the Dreadnought Alliance, helping to deliver further British nuclear submarines. Two of the four units are currently under construction, and the first one to enter service in early 2030.
Around 10,000 people work on the Dreadnought and Astute programs at Barrow. In order to implement such complex programs, it continues to invest and develop in employees, and recruit new talents. Over the next five years, the yard plans to employ more than 200 graduates and 1,500 apprentices.
