Spanish Baleària strengthens position in the Canary Islands

The Spanish shipowner Baleària took over Transportes Intercanarios from the Armas family, which has been engaged in freight transport in the Canary Islands for almost 50 years. The purchase will allow to combine ferry services with road transport and cargo handling on the four main islands of the archipelago.

Transportes Intercanarios has been operating since 1976 and has branches in Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. The takeover gives Baleària a team of about 60 employees and facilities covering more than 500 tractor saddles, semi-trailers, platforms, port machinery and refrigeration and isothermic containers.

For the Spanish shipowner, this means the possibility of merging under one brand ferry services, land transport and part of port services. In practice, the shipowner gains more control over the handling of cargo from the moment of its transport by ship to further distribution on the islands.

Baleària connects ferry transport to road transport

It is also important to deploy the back office of the company. The troops in Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura allow you to operate transport in the most important directions of the archipelago, using their own tractors, semi-trailers and containers.

Thanks to this, Baleària strengthens its position on the Canary market not only as a ferry shipowner. The shipowner expands its operations to include road transport and off-port handling, combining maritime and land transport in a single system.

Personnel for new technologies in navigation

In parallel, the shipowner joined the state vocational training programme on sustainable maritime mobility, which aims to prepare technical staff to handle new solutions in ships and ports.

The programme includes training on dual-fuel engines, electric drives and the supply of electricity from the mainland at a port stop, i.e. OPS systems.

For the industry, this means preparing staff to operate technologies that, together with the modernisation of the fleet and port infrastructure, will be increasingly used in shipping. Baleària thus simultaneously expands its own transport facilities to Canary Islands and engages in training specialists needed to handle new technical solutions.
