Baltica 2 – a giant offshore project will change the energy map of the Baltic Sea

In Polish waters of the Baltic one of the largest offshore investments in Europe is being created – Baltica 2 offshore wind farm, implemented by PGE Baltica in cooperation with Danish company Ørsted. This is a groundbreaking project, which will provide energy to the Polish network in 2027, thus bringing our country closer to the energy transition.

Exact research key to building Baltica 2 – what do experts check?
Before construction works start in 2025, it is necessary to complete a number of studies that are still ongoing. Experts analyse the geological construction of the seabed and its batimetry, conduct geophysical and geotechnical research, and carry out environmental campaigns to determine the impact of investments on the ecosystem. As the project progresses, further analyses reduce uncertainty and go to more detailed studies, including a thorough identification of the ground conditions in the places where the foundations of the farm will be built.
Installation of a farm in the Baltic Sea – how will the construction process take place?
After completion of the research and obtaining the necessary permits, the main construction phase will begin – from the installation of powerful foundations to a complex wiring network. Monopal foundations, weighing up to 2,000 tons, will be pushed to a depth of 30 metres into the seabed to ensure the stability of the entire structure. The farm's wiring stage will then begin – hundreds of kilometres of cables connecting turbines to marine and terrestrial transformer stations are involved.
The last phase will be the assembly of wind turbines. Specialist jack-up units, equipped with powerful cranes, will transport and install rotor diameter windmills exceeding 220 metres. Each turbine requires precise setting and stable weather conditions, therefore the work will be carried out during periods of less windiness.
Ustka Service Base – Wind Farm Operations Center
Operation and service of Baltica 2 will be handled by a modern base in Ustkawhere more than 100 specialists will be employed. It is from there that technicians on high-speed craft will embark on the sea to ensure the efficiency of turbines and ensure their maximum efficiency. Service work will be planned in periods of lower windiness to make the most of the potential of green energy production.
Baltica 2 – the future of Polish energy in the Baltic Sea
Baltica 2 is only the beginning of Polish wind energy in the Baltic Sea. This investment will not only contribute to reducing CO2 emissions but will also open up new opportunities for the national economy and the labour market. If everything goes as planned, the Baltic will soon become one of the pillars of the Polish energy system and Poland will join the leading European leaders in the offshore wind sector.
