Holland barge transports sections of submarines such as Columbia and Virginia

Specialist barge Holland supports the construction of submarines such as Columbia and Virginia. It's a little-known but important part of the American shipping industry, combining Electric Boat and Newport News Shipbuilding.

During today's writing on the future atomic submarine USS District of Columbia (SSBN 826) I found information about the barge Holland, used to transport submarine modules between American shipbuilding facilities. This is a subject that has not been on our website so far, which I considered interesting and undoubtedly matching the profile of the Shipyard Portal. Although it is not a warship, but a specialized transport unit whose role shows well what the industrial programme of Columbia looks like.

Ocean Transport Barge Holland Because that's what the Americans officially call this unit was delivered in December 2021 by Bollinger Shipyards to the General Dynamics Electric Boat shipyard in Groton. Its primary task is to support the construction and servicing of strategic Columbia-type submarines to replace Ohio-type ships.

However, the unit can also be used for the Virginia-type submarine program. In practice, this means that Holland serves as a floating logistics link between Electric Boat, Newport News Shipbuilding and Quonset Point.

Transport of modules between shipyards

The barge is about 122 by 30.5 meters. Its large deck allows transport of larger and heavier hull sections than with older solutions. Already in January 2023 Holland was used to transport submarine modules of the Virginia type intended for vessels Utah (SSN 801) and Oklahoma (SSN 802).

For Newport News Shipbuilding this was an important confirmation that new barge may support not only the ships built under the Columbia programme, but also the current production of Virginia ships. This is important for scheduling, since both programmes use the same industrial base and require precise coordination of supply.

Automatic system ballast

The most interesting element Holland is the way loading and unloading operations are conducted. The barge has a load capacity of about 5500 tons and uses an automatic ballast system that compensates for load changes when moving submarine modules. In practice, this means that the appropriate amount of ballast water is pumped into or removed from the tanks to maintain the appropriate dive, stability and levelling units.

That's a big difference to the older shoulder. Sea Shuttlewhich was based on a lifting system on underwater support. In the case of increasing submarine modules, this solution became a restriction. Holland was created as a response to the increasing requirements of Columbia and the increased scale of modular ship construction.

Logistics as part of ship construction

Columbia shows that modern submarine construction does not end at the production hall, dock and wharf. Logistics between shipyards, transport of large sections, handling facilities and infrastructure is equally important to safely move modules of thousands of tonnes.

In that sense shoulder Holland is one of the less visible but important elements of the American submarine program. Without such units, it would be difficult to keep pace with the parallel construction of ships of this type.
