Emissionless catamarans – Innovative project by Brittany Ferries, Wärtsilä and Incat

Incat, Brittany Ferries and Wärtsilä undertook an ambitious project to create a 137-meter emission-free catamaran. This cooperation is aimed at examining and meeting the design and technical requirements necessary for this breakthrough.

Incat shipyard, specializing in catamaran production, has been working with Brittany Ferries and Wärtsilä for years, developing innovative and ecological solutions. During his recent speech, Stephen Casey, General Manager of Incat, expressed his enthusiasm for this project. He stressed that electric drive combined with light aluminum units is an ideal solution to eliminate emissions. Casey also pointed out that Incat, along with its partners, wants to introduce further stages of sustainable maritime transport in Europe.

Brittany Ferries is in the process of the largest fleet renewal program in its history, planning to introduce five new ships by 2025. These include two LNG-powered vessels and two LNG-electric hybrid units. Christophe Mathieu, CEO of Brittany Ferries, underlines the importance of this project in seeking to achieve zero net emissions by 2050. Completely electric power supply is a key solution, especially for shorter ferry routes, which confirms Brittany Ferries' experience of sustainable ferry travel.

Wärtsilä, who has worked with Brittany Ferries for years, is a supplier of advanced propulsion systems. The company played a key role in the development of Brittany Ferries fleet, providing LNG engines and propulsion systems for hybrid units. Roger Holm, Executive Vice President of Wärtsilä Corporation, points out that ferries play a key role in meeting the growing demand for environmentally sustainable transport options. Wärtsilä, as a leader in the decarbonisation of the maritime industry, continues its commitment to accelerate the industry towards zero CO2 shipping.

Incat's emission-free ferry project, Brittany Ferries and Wärtsilä is not only an innovative step forward but also an important element in global efforts towards sustainable development. By combining the forces and competences of the three industry leaders, the future of maritime transport can become more ecological and environmentally friendly.
