Construction of the second SIGINT vessel under the Dolphin Programme

As part of a key project codenamed "Delfin", Shipbuilding S.A. Shipbuilding Shipbuilding S.A. shipyard initiated the construction of a second unit in the SIGINT electronic reconnaissance series (Signals Intelligence Ships). This important step underlines Poland's commitment to developing its intelligence capabilities in the seas and oceans.

The launch of the construction of this ship is not only another step in strengthening the intelligence potential of the Polish Navy, but also in demonstrating effective international cooperation. As a subcontractor of the Swedish company Saab, Shipbuilding Repair Yard plays a key role in project implementation Dolphin. Their task is to build modern electronic reconnaissance ships, which is an important part of this ambitious venture.

This new unit, bearing the name of Henryk Zygalski – an outstanding Polish mathematician and cryptologist, key to breaking the Enigma code – strengthens the traditions of Polish cryptology and innovation in the field of defence.

The agreement concluded last year with Saab for the design, production and support of two Sigint units (Signal Intelligence) with a total value of approximately EUR 620 million, assumes delivery of ships by 2027. Saab Kockums AB, as the main contractor, is responsible for the design, production and integration of advanced intelligence systems, while Shipbuilding Repair focuses on building, testing and preparing ships for operation.

Designed to effectively collect intelligence data, ships pk. Dolphin are designed to replace aging units of project 863: ORP Navigator and ORP Hydrograf. This replacement underlines the modernization of the Polish fleet, reflecting technological and tactical evolution in the field of intelligence activities at sea. These modern units, equipped with state-of-the-art systems and technologies, will significantly increase Poland's intelligence capabilities at sea, being an important element in the strategic development of the Polish Navy.

SIGINT recognition units will play a key role in obtaining information from electronic intelligence signals. These ships will fulfil a number of tasks, including monitoring and interception of radio signals to identify communication between different military or civilian units, analysing and decoding intercepted signals for military or civilian purposes, detecting and locating sources of signals to determine the position of the opponent, supporting the activities of the armed forces by providing information on military activity in the area, and conducting exploratory activities to obtain information on plans and activities of hostile States or organisations.
