The Damen group shipyard has completed the renovation of the Norwegian cruiser

Belonging to the Dutch shipyard holding Damen shipyard Damen Shiprepair in Brest has completed the Norwegian amateur cruise ship repair program. A significant part of the work was the renovation of two azimutual propulsors produced by ABB.

The Damen Shipbuilding Group reported that a 326 m long Norwegian Breakaway cruise ship (owned by Norwegian Cruise Line) in the dry dock of the shipyard in Brest spent 11 days. On 8 May this year, six hours before the planned completion of the repairs, the ship left dock.

Laurent Salou, manager of the Damen Shiprepair shipyard emphasizes that the Restoration Yard in Brest is able to carry out repairs of even such large units. As he adds, the Norwegian shipowner has just chosen its offer, as the shipyard is located relatively near the Southampton cruise terminal. It was the last port Norwegian Breakaway wrapped in before the renovation.

Salou points out that in 2015 the Damen Group repair yard had already successfully implemented the order of the Norwegian shipowner, which concerned the Epic vessel.

What was the renovation program? The Damen Group stated in the communication that the Damen Shiprepair Brest shipyard team had worked with engineers seconded by ABB. It was primarily about repairing shaft bearings and replacing rotary seals in azimutal propulsors produced by ABB.

The Dutch shipbuilding holding reports that the execution of such a range of work required the dismantling of both propellers. This operation, carried out by a team of ABB specialists, required a lot of precision, because dust or other pollution could not get inside the propulsion systems.

The yard technicians also performed the renovation of three forward hydraulic actuators of the ship and three stabilizers. The former were manufactured by Brunvoll and the latter by Fincantieri, an Italian company specializing in the construction of cruise ships.

The scope of the work was also covered by hull painting. It was all about simple painting, as well as making decorative designs.
