Patrol ships and environmental protection units — Marine safety pillars
It has not been a month since the publication of our article, in which we informed about the announcement by the Kingdom of Denmark of strategic plans to modernise Søværnet when Copenhagen went to the stage of their implementation. As part of this program, the government will allocate about 4 billion Danish kronor (about $614 million) to strengthen maritime defence capabilities.
The basis of the new plan will be OPV, designed for operations in territorial waters and in the Danish exclusive economic zone. These unitsto ensure continuous surveillance of shipping, to enable the control of suspicious vessels and to support activities related to the fight against hybrid threats which are increasingly emerging in the Baltic and North Sea.
The fleet will be complemented by specialised ships to protect the marine environment, which, in addition to classic tasks such as neutralising the effects of oil spills, will be able to carry out patrol activities, reconnaissance and support in combating marine mines. New platforms will replace used type unitsSupplyandSeatruck, providing Copenhagen with a modern tool to protect both the environment and underwater critical infrastructure.
Unmanned systems and sonars – response to underwater threats
The integrated part of the programme is intended to be unmanned systems and modern sonar systems, which will enable long-term monitoring of offshore cables, pipelines and pipelines. In a time of increasing risk of sabotaging critical infrastructure – as a symbolic example of the attack on Nord Stream gas pipelines – such solutions become crucial for ensuring the safety not only of Denmark but of the entire Baltic Sea region.
Cooperation with NATO and the national shipbuilding industry
The Ministry of Defence announced that most ships would be built in Danish shipyards, with the possible participation of countriesAlliedNATO. This is not only an investment in safety, but also an impulse for the local shipbuilding industry and the development of competences in the field of modern marine technologies.
Part of a larger recovery plan for the Danish war fleet
The implementation of the modernisation programme Søværnet is part of a broader plan to restore the defence potential of the Kingdom of Denmark. After more than a decade of budget cuts, in 2024 the government allocated 190 billion Danish crowns to the development of the armed forces over a ten-year period. This expenditure is intended to restore operational capacity corresponding to modern threats, particularly in the field of maritime safety.
A real response to the shadow float and new threats
Increased activity of Russian "shadow float", transporting oil, weapons and grain in violation of sanctions, as well as a series of incidents aroundoffshore infrastructurecritical, showed how urgent it is to strengthen patrol and reconnaissance capabilities.
Minister Obrony Danii, Troels Lund Poulsen
