Danish EPA issued environmental decisions for the location of Baltic Pipe

The Danish Environmental Protection Agency (Danish EPA) has issued two environmental decisions relating to the location of the Baltic Pipe pipeline in the land-based part of Denmark – one for the Gas-System, the other for the Danish gas and energy transmission system operator Energinet.
The decision for the Gas-System shall include the connection between the offshore pipeline at the bottom of the Baltic Sea and the transmission network for which the Energinet is responsible.
The permit also includes the construction of a microtunnel to the shoreline in which the gas pipeline will be placed. By using microtuneling technology, the environmental impact will be minimised, and the gas pipeline will not harm the Danish beach and cliff.
Danish EPA approval was necessary so that the operators of GAZ-SYSTEM and Energinet.dk could begin the implementation of the pipeline. Before issuing environmental decisions, the project's assumptions were consulted with the Danish public in the second phase of the public consultation.
‘The authorisation process shall follow the established timetable. Another milestone behind us. The next important step is to obtain a permit for construction", says Gaz-System President Tomasz Stępień.
Baltic Pipe is a strategic project aimed at creating a new natural gas supply route from Norway to the Danish and Polish markets and to end-users in neighbouring countries.
The implementation of this investment will strengthen the energy security of Poland and the region of Central and Eastern Europe and will increase the competitiveness of the Polish gas market.
Gas pipeline will be able to transport 10 billion m3 of natural gas per year to Poland and 3 billion m3 of raw material from Poland to Denmark.
The expected phase of construction works will begin in 2020.
With Baltic Pipe from October 2022, it will be possible to import natural gas from deposits on the Norwegian Continental Shelf.
