Fincantieri enters the LSM program. The construction of new landing ships for the US Navy is underway

The Fincantieri Marine Group received its first contract as part of the LSM midship construction program for the United States naval forces. The agreement opens the preparatory phase, which is to lead to the start of the construction of the first units later this year.

The US$30 million contract includes the purchase of long-term supplies and engineering works needed to start construction. In practice, it is about creating a back-up for the first four ships and entering the programme into the real construction phase. The contract was signed on 14 April, while Fincantieri published her own communication on this matter a day later on 15 April.
First step to the construction of the series oLSM landing windings
The contract concluded does not yet mean the start of full-scale production, but it is of great importance for the entire programme. It is at this stage that key elements of equipment are ordered, the work documentation is prepared and the necessary actions are launched to achieve readiness in ship industry.
If the schedule is maintained, the construction of the first units is to begin in the fourth quarter of this year. For the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps, this is an important moment because the LSM program is one of the essential elements of the reconstruction of landing and logistics capabilities.
Two shipyards to start
The initial production of LSM Block 1 ships is to be distributed between two contractors. Along with Fincantieri Marine Group, Bollinger Shipyards from Mississippi will also participate in the program.
Parallel to the United States Naval Systems Command, or NAVSEA, carries out activities related to the selection of the entity responsible for the construction and coordination of supplies. This model shows that the Americans want to organize from the beginning not only production but also management of the entire venture.
Important program for Fincantieri
For Fincantieri, entry into the LSM programme has meaning beyond the value of the first contract itself. The Americans again bet on the Italian company despite previous problems of the frigate type program Constellation, which is stuck in delays and design changes. This is an important signal that shows that the group itself and its American establishments have not been crossed out in Washington, D.C., but are looking for a new place for them in the American shipping industry.
It is also important to see the scale of existing investments. Over the last decade, Fincantieri has allocated over USD 800 million to the development of its plants in the United States and employs around 3,000 employees there. Getting involved in a new ship program thus strengthens her position on the American shipbuilding market, and at the same time shows that for the US Navy today matters not only the history of a problematic program, but also the maintenance of real production capacity.
Up to 35 ships for new tasks
The LSM program assumes construction of up to 35 units, defined as a type McClung. The design is to be based on the Damen LST-100 project, which is a proven solution from the mid-size landing ship segment.
New units are expected to fill the gap between large ocean landing vessels and smaller metastatic means. Thus, ships that can operate closer to the coast, carry equipment, supplies, and subdivisions will be better suited to dispersed activities in endangered waters.
It is this direction of thinking that is increasingly visible today in American plans. Less is it about big, spectacular platforms, and more about the ability to flexibly spread forces and maintain logistics inside the theatre of action.
Indo-Pacific background
Although the program has a wider dimension, its logic is clear primarily in the context of Indo-Pacific. In this area, U.S. forces must be required to act under dispersal conditions, under enemy pressure and on a large number of directions simultaneously.
LSM ships are intended to facilitate such operations. They will be able to support smaller groups, move equipment and supplies where the use of larger ships would be less practical or too risky. This is not a secondary programme, therefore, but an element of a wider change in the way American maritime forces operate.
Not only a contract, but a signal to the market
The first deal for Fincantieri does not yet determine the entire pace of the program, but shows that Americans are moving from assumptions to actions. It is also another signal that pragmatism plays an increasingly important role in US Navy purchasing policy: using available projects, dividing production among shipyards and quickly building capacity where they are most needed.
That's why LSM program It's worth watching carefully. This is not just about new landing ships, but about a wider change in the approach to war at sea, logistics and shipbuilding.
