Fincantieri passes the fourth frigate of PPA Giovanni delle Bande Nere for Marina Militare

On 2 October, at the Fincantieri shipyard in Muggiano, La Spezia held a ceremony of incarnation into the service of the fourth multitasking frigate of the PPA type – Giovanni delle Bande Nere. It is a key element of the Italian Navy Military modernization program, coordinated by the OCCAR international organization.

Fregata Giovanni delle Bande Nere in the version ‘full

Giovanni delle Bande Nere is the first unit of PPA type delivered in full combat configuration (full). These frigates feature exceptional operational flexibility, which allows you to perform a wide range of tasks, ranging from patrol missions and naval rescue, to full-scale combat operations. Thanks to modular design, these ships can be adapted to the specific operational needs – from the "light" version, equipped with basic self-defense systems to the "full" version, armed with advanced defense systems, making them capable of carrying out combat activities at the highest level.

PPA frigate capacity

PPA frigate Giovanni delle Bande Nere, is characterised by the use of modular elements of the platform, which allows for flexible adaptation of their operational characteristics according to mission needs. Thanks to the length of 143 meters and the drive of the type CODAG (Combined Diesel And Gas), Giovanni delle Bande Nere may develop a speed exceeding 31 knots, making it one of the fastest frigates of this type.

The crew is 171 sailors and was designed not only for combat activities but also for humanitarian support operations. It has systems allowing the supply of drinking water and electricity to land, which is crucial in crisis situations such as natural disasters.

In addition, the frigate is equipped with fast semi-rigid-Hulled Inflatable Boats, which are available on board and can be used during landing and rescue missions. The presence of these boats significantly increases the mobility of the vessel and its operational capacity, especially in operations requiring rapid operation at sea.

Thanks to its versatility and advanced PPA technologies are the foundation of modern international operations, contributing to maintaining stability and security in global waters.

Delivery ceremony and future prospects

Among the distinguished guests were Deputy Admiral Andrea Gueglio, Director of Italian Military Staff Marina Militare, Admiral Giuseppe Abbamonte, Director of Naval Armed Forces Agency (NAVARM), and Joachim Sucker, Director of OCCAR. They were welcomed by Attilio Dapelo, Vice President of Operations at the Marine Units Department, and Antonio Quintano, director of two shipyards Riva Trigoso and Muggiano.

The construction of a frigate of the PPA type is part of a long-term plan for the renewal of the fighting lines of the Italian fleet to be completed by 2026. Transmission Giovanni delle Bande Nere is another important step in this programme, confirming Fincantieri's commitment to the development of modern naval units with the highest combat standards.
