Naval Group with new Scorpène submarine proposal for Indonesia

On October 13, the French shipbuilding company Naval Group presented an updated proposal for the Indonesia Navy. Instead of the traditional version of the conventional Scorpène submarine, the French company now proposes a model called Scorpène Evolved equipped with lithium-ion batteries.
In February 2022, during a meeting of representatives of France and Indonesia, a letter of intent was signed between the Naval Group and the Indonesian shipbuilding industry PT PAL concerning the delivery of two conventional submarines of the Scorpène type.
The company's new proposal provides for the resignation of classic lead-acid batteries for advanced lithium-ion batteries. With this change, these ships will have a much larger range and extended operational time in immersion. It is estimated that Scorpène Evolved will have operational capacity up to 80 days, of which 78 days in immersion, beating at that time to 8000 Mm.
The introduction of LiB technology is crucial for operations conducted by the Indonesian Navy. These ships will be easier and cheaper to operate compared to ships equipped with AIP drive, which requires an extensive supply infrastructure. In addition, lithium-ion batteries have about 40% longer life than traditional batteries.
Moreover, the Naval Group offers modern weapons including heavy WASS Black Shark and F21 torpedoes and MBDA SM39 Exocet anti-ship missiles. The use of these systems will significantly increase the offensive capabilities of Indonesian submarine forces.

In order to strengthen its position on the Indonesian market, Naval Group also plans to invest in that country. In November 2022, cooperation began to explore new energy sources for submarines. If the offer is accepted, the Naval Group undertakes to reinvest 30% of the contract value directly on the Indonesian market.
The new ships will have larger dimensions than their predecessors, with a displacement of up to 1900 tonnes and a length of 70.62 m. Four MTU diesel engines and Jeumont-Schneider electric engine will be responsible for the drive. Scorpène enjoys great interest in the international market, with orders from countries such as Chile, Malaysia, India or Brazil. Negotiations are also ongoing with Romania and the Philippines.
The updating of the proposal for Indonesia by the Naval Group underlines innovation and the desire to provide partners with the latest technologies in the field of submarine construction.
