GAZ-SYSTEM and Energinet sign a cooperation agreement on energy security

On 26 April 2023, gas transmission system operators from Poland and Denmark, GAZ-SYSTEM and Energinet, signed the Memorandum of Cooperation. The agreement establishes a framework for cooperation between the two operators to accelerate the energy transition and strengthen regional energy security in Europe.

The Memorandum of Cooperation was signed in Denmark during the Baltic Pipe ceremony organized by Energinet, in the presence of Minister of Climate and Environment of the Polish Government Anna Moscow and Minister of Climate, Energy and Supply of the Danish Government Lars Aagaard.

The objective of the agreement is to ensure safe and continuous supply of natural gas by the Baltic Pipe pipeline and to develop new areas related to low and zero-emission energy sources, including biomethane and hydrogen. Both parties have committed to coordinated action to develop a legislative and implementation framework for technical solutions in the field of biomethane and hydrogen transmission, in order to contribute to the objectives of the European Union's climate policy and to reduce the emissions of the European economy.

Together with Energinet we have implemented Baltic Pipe, a key project for energy security of Poland. Our task as a national operator is to ensure continuity of supply of natural gas by offshore pipeline, but we are also looking forward to the future – towards new energy sources. The signed agreement allows the two companies to take coordinated action to develop a legislative and implementation framework for technical solutions in the field of biomethane and hydrogen transmission.

Both parties also declared their willingness to continue working on research projects related to the development of new technologies and energy sources, including biomethane and hydrogen. These actions aim to accelerate the energy transition process and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Building on the positive experience gained during the construction of Baltic Pipe, Energinet and GAZ-SYSTEM, they are currently focusing on "accelerated decarbonisation through green gases" and "increasing regional security of gas supply.

Under the agreement of GAZ-SYSTEM and Energinet, working groups were set up to operate in several R & D sectors and will actively cooperate in international industry organisations. The sector priorities of the future Polish and Danish Presidency of the Council of the European Union in 2025 are also planned. All of these activities are intended to contribute to strengthening regional energy security and to secure and continuous supply of natural gas in Europe.
