Greece accuses Turkey of attempting to escort a motorboat with migrants to Greek waters

Greece's shipping minister Jannis Plakiotakis accused Turkey on Tuesday of breaking commitments to the EU in connection with a previously published recording of the Greek Coast Guard, on which you can see a motorboat filled with migrants escorted by two Turkish boats.
Once again, Turkey behaved like a "piracy state" in the Aegean Sea, breaking its commitments to the EU," Plakiotakis said.
"The video shows clearly the actions shipThis Turkish coastguard who perform dangerous maneuvers to direct a motorboat (with migrants) to Greek waters, east of the island of Lesbos," said Greek Coast Guard.
According to the AFP agency, approximately 15 people can be seen in a minute video of the Greek security services on an escorted motorboat.
Greece regularly accuses Turkey of bringing boats from its coast with migrants into Greece's territorial waters, which runs counter to the March 2016 agreement between Turkey and the European Union. It assumes that the state authorities in Ankara will try to reduce migration in exchange for EU financial assistance, recalls the AFP.
Meanwhile, the Athens authorities have in recent months met allegations from media and non-governmental organisations fighting for human rights regarding the return of migrants to Turkey," the agency says. In early October, the European Commission called on Athens to investigate these allegations.
Greece, located in the south-east of the EU and with islands within the reach of the Turkish coast, is one of the countries most visited by refugees from Africa, Asia and the Middle East. Over the last few years, hundreds of thousands of people fleeing war and poverty from these parts of the world have reached Europe through the Greek islands.
