HNLMS Luymes takes command of NATO forces SNMCMG1

The Kingdom of the Netherlands took command of the NATO Permanent Defence Force Team Group 1 (SNMCMG1). The role of the flagship for the next four months will be performed by the hydrographic unit HNLMS Luymes (A803).

Change in NATO Command SNMCMG1
On 2 January 2025, the Ministry of Defence of the Kingdom of the Netherlands reported the launch of the mission by HNLMS Luymes. Ship replaced German unit FGS Werra of type Elbe, which served as a flagship in previous months. The team, in addition to the command ship, will also include the mine destroyer HNLMS Schiedam (M860) and other NATO mine units.
The task of SNMCMG1 is to monitor and eliminate mine risks in the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. Regular patrols and participation in exercises strengthen the safety of key shipping routes in the region.
HNLMS Luymes – Unit characteristics
HNLMS Luymes is a hydrographic vessel of type Snelliuswho entered the service of Koninklijke Marine in 2004. It was built by Damen, whose hull was made in Romanian Gałacz, and the final equipment was carried out in Vlissingen. In 2020 the unit passed thorough modernisation, also by the DAMEN shipbuilding company, which increased its operational capacity.
HNLMS Luymes is a ship that displaces 1875 tons, is 75 metres long and 13 metres wide. It is powered by two diesel engines, which allow to reach a maximum speed of 12 knots.
SNMCMG1's role in NATO structure
NATO's Permanent Defense Force Group 1 (SNMCMG1) is one of the four Permanent Teams of the Alliance of Marines. Its main task is to neutralise the risks arising from the presence of marine mines, which constitute a real danger to civil and military shipping.
SNMCMG1 regularly participates in international emergency exercises and operations, as well as in actions to remove historical marine mine remnants from World War II.
The permanent presence of SNMCMG1 in the North and Baltic Sea strengthens NATO's ability to respond rapidly to potential threats and to ensure freedom of navigation on key commercial routes.
Meaning of the HNLMS mission Luymes
HNLMS acquisition of command Luymes emphasises the active role of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in NATO structures. It is also a confirmation of the high level of technical and operational fleet of the country.
The presence of a hydrographic vessel in the role of SNMCMG1 command unit, it allows precise coordination of mine activities, effective planning of operations and increased safety of navigation in the North Sea and the Baltic Sea.
HNLMS Mission Luymes Under SNMCMG1, it is another step in strengthening NATO's defence capabilities in key European waters. Thanks to modern equipment and experienced crew, the ship will effectively coordinate the team's activities, contributing to greater stability and maritime safety in the region.
Maritime security this shared responsibility and SNMCMG1 remains one of the pillars of this cooperation.
