India wants to rent a szczuk-B submarine from Russia

Indian Polish Navy talks with the Russian side about renting one nuclear-powered submarine project 971 (Szczuka-B type, in NATO code Akula). According to information provided by India Today, the Indian delegation headed by Vice Admiral Soonil Bhokare inspected two units of this type (the Bratsk and Samara ships). After signing the intergovernmental agreement, one of the ships is to be transferred to the Indian side only after modernization.
In October Indian sources reported that negotiations on the lease of a submarine were stuck in a dead end due to a lack of consensus on financial issues. A total of US$2.5 billion was taken as the base amount (for such a sum, another szczuk-B submarine was loaned in 2011 for 10 years, which entered the service of the Indian Navy under the name of Chakra), with difficulties in agreeing how much it would increase in connection with the new agreement. However, the parties seem to have finally reached an agreement and the final amount is expected to amount to approximately 3.3 billion US dollars.
The planned modernisation of the ship will be in depth and will involve, among other things, the installation of a number of Indian systems on board the unit, as well as the replacement of an atomic reactor. The Indian side would like to receive the ship as early as 2023, but its modernization will also touch offensive elements, i.e. torpedoes and missile missiles, which will most likely prolong the work and thus also hand over the unit to the Navy.

The Szczuka-B submarine is to be marked as "Chakra-3" and replace the existing unit of this type – INS Chakra, whose loan date from the Russian side is 2022. Discussions on leasing another unit are related to wider negotiations to supply various military technologies to India for about $10 billion, including helicopters, frigates or assault rifle production lines. Recently (in October of that year) the parties were able to agree to purchase five sets of S-400 missile system by India.
Russia and India are also discussing joint development work and the construction of a new nuclear-powered submarine in one of the Indian shipyards. It is planned to create a prototype, after which the Russian side is to transfer technology and documentation to India.
