Iran's fined tributary Elyana crosses the Suez Canal

Ship Elyana, affiliated with Iranian state shipowner IRISL and subject to US sanctions, passed via the Suez Canal on 3 May. Although officially heading for Benghazi in Libya, the specificity of the route and the possibility of carrying cargo with a potential military destination raise serious doubts in the context of the entity's earlier activities.

Iran’s generalist Elyana heading for Benghazi – the route is controversial
Ship (General cargo) Elyana IMO number: 9165827, 168.46 metres long and 26 metres wide, flying the flag of the Islamic Republic of Iran, was observed crossing the Suez Canal on 3 May. The unit belongs to IRISL shipowner, sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury Department, and moves at approximately 8–9 knots towards the port of Benghazi in Libya.
Equipped with on-board load cranes, Elyana It is adapted for independent handling operations in ports with limited infrastructure. Such abilities have already been used – including in Yemen's areas controlled by Huti rebels and in Syria's Latakia, one of the main transhipment points of Iran's military supplies to Hezbollah and forces loyal to the Bashar al-Assad regime.
Shipping route of the craft Elyana It began on 18 April in the port of Bandar Abbas. The only intermediate port it entered was Jebel Ali in the United Arab Emirates – she left it on April 22. No further port calls and unusual transition times may indicate a non-standard operation. In June 2024, the unit delivered cargo from Iran to Latakia – a port known as the main logistics channel of Iran's arms supply to Hezbollah and Syrian forces.
In view of the shipowner's links to the Iranian arms industry and the specificity of the route, there are reasonable doubts as to the nature of the cargo carried – it cannot be excluded that on board the unit There's a gun. or equipment capable of military use.
Potential for operations in sanctioned waters
Elyana, as a unit equipped with side cranes, has the possibility to tranship without the need to call into developed commercial ports. This means the ability to operate in areas covered by the embargo, including off the Yemeni coast, with the exception of the monitored Hodeida and Ras Isa terminals.
Although today Elyana declares course on Benghazi, the destination may be changed, especially if the unit intends to unload outside the official register. This division, controlled by General Haftar's forces, has been out of full international control for years, favoring undeclared and smuggling activities.
United States reaction
On April 30, U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, in a sharp announcement on platform X, warned Tehran against further support for Huti rebels: "We see your DEATH support for Huti. We know exactly what you're doing." On the escalation of Iran's activities in the Red Sea and the increasing number of attacks using drones and rockets, We have previously been informed on our portal, pointing to the increasing risk to commercial and regional energy balance.
