Further details on future BMD destroyers

On 23 December, the Japanese Ministry of Defence announced an expenditure plan for 2023 which included details of future Japanese missile defense destroyers (BMD), known as ASEV (Aegis System-Equipped Vessels).

ASEV It is a ship that is to ensure Japan's defence against the threat of a ballistic missile attack, mainly from North Korea and replace in this role the program of construction of Aegis Ashore's shore installations was deleted in 2020.

In Japan, especially since 2016, the threat of ballistic missiles from North Korea has been treated as a real problem. Since then, destroyers equipped with Aegis Japanese Marine Defense Forces (JMSDF) systems are deployed in the Japanese Sea to be on alert in the event of North Korea's launch of ballistic missiles.

MoD declares the need for two new ships ASEVto relieve any air defense destroyers we have. New ships with more capabilities than existing destroyers are to be able to cope with current ballistic hazards, but also to neutralize hypersonic gliders (HGVs).

Preliminary information on ASEV are 210 metres long and 40 metres wide, buoyancy of 20,000 tons and crew of about 110 people. Crew comfort on board will be a priority, as all crew members will have separate cabins provided. Length and buoyancy ASEV corresponds to DDH type Izumo (248 metres long, standard displacement of 1900 tons), the largest unit in JMSDF.

The published document gives the date of commission of both destroyers. JMDF plans to receive them to FY2027, that is between April 2027 and March 2028. This time is necessary for the development of the J7.B Aegis Weapon System (AWS), which will be adapted to these ships. The J7.B version is the integration of SPY-7 radar with J7 (BL9), the latest software currently installed by JMSDF ships into the Aegis system. The J7.B system was successfully tested in August 2022 by the Missile Defense Agency (MDA).
