The German Chancellor still opposes the suspension of Russian energy imports

Chancellor Olaf Scholz reiterates his opposition to the idea of stopping Russian energy imports. "This is a conscious, reasoned and understandable decision that we will not stop the imports we have in Europe in the field of energy," he said on Friday after the informal EU summit in Versailles.

Europe is much more dependent on energy imports than the United States and Canada, which are therefore more easily coping with the current situation," indicated the head of government in Berlin.

According to the German Ministry of Economy, Russian gas accounts for about 55% of imports of this raw material into Germany. In the case of coal, this is about 50%, and in the case of oil, it is about 35%, as in the case of dpa.

Scholz also said that he expected the European Union to adhere to the proposal to double military aid for Ukraine.

"I think no one believes that (the head of EU diplomacy Josep Borrell) was wrong to say that the EU should continue to engage in this issue," said Scholz journalists after the EU leaders' meeting in Versailles, answering the question whether Borrell's proposal was agreed at the summit to allocate another EUR 500 million to EU military assistance to Ukraine.

"This sum is on the table," said Scholz.
