KERSHIP begins the construction of two OPVs for Montenegro

On 24 April, a ceremony was held at the KERSHIP shipyard in Lorient, inaugurating the construction of two naval patrol vessels (OPV) intended for the Montenegrin Navy. The start of construction symbolizes an important step in the modernisation of Montenegrin's naval forces. New bodies will increase their capacity to protect territorial waters, Addressing threats asymmetric and participation in international operations, including NATO missions. Defence Minister Dragan Krapović stressed the importance of partnership with France as a strategic ally within the Euro-Atlantic structures.

The new OPVs will respond to contemporary maritime security challenges, including the fight against smuggling, illegal migration and the protection of state interests in the exclusive economic zone and territorial waters.

OPV 60 – compact force in the protection of maritime borders

Montenegro has decided to select a proven OPV 60 structure, currently in the Senegal Navy service, the design of which was developed by the KERSHIP shipyard. They characterize quite large – for individuals of this class – marine courage and considerable autonomy, enabling operations to be carried out for 21 days without having to call the port.

62.2 metres long and 620 tons long, thanks to modular design and robust armaments, they implement the concept of modern patrol boats capable of carrying out a wide range of tasks in the protection of maritime borders and compliance with law at sea.

Meaning for NATO and regional security

The entry into service of the new OPV 60 planned for the period 2026–2027, according to the timetable, will not only strengthen Montenegro's national defence potential, but will also increase NATO's alliance capacity, particularly in maritime operations in the Adriatic Sea. Thanks to these units Polish Navy Montenegro will gain a tool to actively participate in allied missions and to respond effectively to crisis situations in the region.

The construction of these units for Montenegro is not only a strengthening of the national maritime defence, but also an important element of integration within NATO structures. Modern units will increase security in the Adriatic and will enable effective execution of tasks both during peace and in crisis situations.
