The Confederacy asks the government if it is ready to block the construction of Nord Stream 2

Does the Polish government envisage blocking the construction of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline? What is Poland going to do in the new geopolitical situation? – the Confederate politicians asked on Monday, referring to the arrest of Russian oppositionist Alexey Navalny.

According to a member of the Michał Urbaniak Confederation on the Nawalny case, "there is a tough international policy and its reality". "A country that does not treat its own citizens in a respectful way, at the same time is one of the authors of the Nord Stream 2 project, which for us as Poles is a very dangerous project" - he said.

"International policy is a policy of interest. The government of the Law and Justice Party often forgets this, which is why it has also led a one-vector policy, and has put it on Republicans (in the USA – PAP), forgetting about other alliances and constellations. There is a great opportunity for the Polish government to demonstrate its effectiveness" - emphasised Urbaniak.

A member of the Witold Stoch Confederation pointed out that "in the context of the construction of Nord Stream 2 is an important decision of the new US authorities".

"Is the Polish government prepared for changes in the United States administration, and is it ready for a situation where America stops blocking Nord Stream 2? Does the Polish government envisage blocking the construction of Nord Stream 2 and is it ready for such solutions? We expect answers from the head of the MFA Zbigniew Raua and Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, what Poland intends to do in this new geopolitical situation," said Confederate politicians.

According to Urbaniak, U.S. President-elect Joe Biden "may not be willing to impose sanctions against building Nord Stream 2". "This is another aspect that Polish diplomacy should address, that is, putting pressure on the United States to maintain and create new sanctions against the Nord Stream 2 project. We as Poles should be particularly interested in this, because this project affects political security, energy security of Poland, including relations with Germany," said Urbaniak.

On Monday, the Deputy Head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs informed that Poland had initiated talks with EU Member States to bring an urgent debate together in the UN Human Rights Council on the arrest of Alexey Navalny.

President Andrzej Duda also addressed the appeal for international solidarity in the Navalny case, who, in a Sunday Twitter entry, stated that "the Russian authorities' actions towards Alexey Navalny must not have consequences for the international community's relations with this country". "On behalf of Poland, a member of the UN Human Rights Council, I call for international solidarity in this situation," wrote the President.

Alexey Navalny was detained on Sunday, after arriving from Berlin to Moscow. Nawalny flew to the Russian capital after treatment in Germany, where he was critical in August 2020 as a result of the use against him in Russia of a combat chemical belonging to a group of so-called novelists – poisons developed by chemists still in the USSR.

In 2014, Nawalny was sentenced to 3.5 years of imprisonment in suspension for five years. The Russian Federal Prison Service (FSIN) has announced that it has been wanted by a BOLO since 29 December 2020. FSIN claims that the oppositionist violates the terms of suspension of the execution of the penalty five years ago. Following the detention of Navalny, FSIN stated that it would remain in custody until a decision of the court to determine the so-called preventive measure against it. FSIN wants the court to replace Naval with probation for jail time.
