Fishing boat returned from the Vistula Basin. The Border Guard showed gross negligence

The Border Guard returned the fishing boat from the Vistula Basin to the port in Stara Pasłęka after the inspection carried out on 5 May. Officers showed deficiencies in crew documents, emergency equipment and means of communication.

Control of fishing vessel on the Vistula river

5 May control group from vessel SG-045 Kashubian Squadron Border Guard checked the fishing boat operating on the Vistula. There were two fishermen on board.

In the course of their actions, officers have found serious security violations. The skipper and crewman did not have STCW certificates. The unit also lacked the required rescue measures, important pyrotechnics and VHF communications radio.

Equipment deficiencies and non-compliance with the safety card

The check also showed that the outboard engine was not compatible with the unit's safety card. In practice, this meant that the boat should not continue fishing activities.

The skippers were ordered to stop fishing immediately and return to the port of Stara Pasłęka. The Border Guard's decision was directly related to the level of negligence that could affect the safety of the crew.

Application to the Maritime Office in Gdynia

The commander of the Kashubian Border Guard Squadron will apply to the Director of the Maritime Office in Gdynia to initiate administrative proceedings against the skipper.

The case shows that even in coastal waters, basic emergency equipment, efficient communication and required crew qualifications are not a formality, but part of the safety of people working at sea.
