LHD Trieste launched

The ship's launching ceremony was attended by Italian President Sergio Matrarella and the head of the Navy of this country Admiral Valter Girardelli. According to the Italian company Trieste will enter service in Marina Militare in 2022. In operational terms, the ship will be able to transport not only aircraft and helicopters, but also amphibious units through the use of a sinking dock on the stern of the ship.

Trieste will have 1,000 beds for the crew and soldiers. The unit will be capable of transporting a battalion of 600 soldiers and equipment, which will accommodate a total area of 1,200 metres running in the on-board garage. This sinking dock, 50 metres long and 15 metres wide, will be able to accommodate NATO and EU amphibious units. There is also a place for fast patrol boats that develop a speed of 40 knots.

In addition to allowing the projection of the Italian naval force, Trieste will be able to carry out a mission to help countries and populations affected by natural disasters through the capacity to supply drinking water, power supply, healthcare and medical assistance. The unit was also designed to carry out command and control functions in the event of emergencies at sea, evacuation of the population and humanitarian aid operations.

On board will also be a fully equipped hospital with operating rooms, radiological and surgical offices, dental office and rooms for patients able to accommodate 27 seriously injured people. The cargo area of the ship will be available for use with cranes, stern ramps and side ramps, and the whole will be operated using internal ramps and elevators.

Fincantieri is also in the process of equipping the Vulcano logistics support vessel. The delivery of the unit will likely be delayed as it was severely damaged in the fire in July 2018. Only a month after she was launched.
