Icebreakers resume work on the Vistula

The icebreakers resumed their work in Wisla at 7 a.m. on Wednesday in Włocławek, Anna Łukaszewska-Trzeciakowska, Director of the Regional Management Board of Water Management in Warsaw. She added that the thaw had come and that it would be easier to drain the krill.
"The space behind me is clear. The icebreakers resumed work on the Vistula at 7:00 a.m. They set out for the Włocławski Tank to try to expand the gutter again. The weather has changed. There's a thaw coming. He's also changed. wind. He weakened and changed direction in such a way that he allows us to drive the spin through the mountains" - said Łukaszewska-Trzeciakowska.
The director of RZGW in Warsaw added that the briefings lasted at night and in the morning decisions were made to restart six icebreakers.
"We think they will be working without breaks for a few weeks to crush the ice. The aim is to preserve the safety of local residents located next to the Vistula," she said.
The head of the E.R.G. stated that a responsible approach could be made to 24-hour forecasts. Later these are estimates.
"It seems, however, that the conditions will allow to break the ice without interruptions. However, if there is a return of action again, twice a day we hold staffs and the decision will be changed. We are not predicting this for now," she added.
In her opinion, the action will be very difficult and will take several weeks.
"It will be a long, hard ice-breaking action. Its purpose is to protect residents and to flush the ice continuously. So to release the tank for taking increased flows" - emphasised Łukaszewska-Trzeciakowska.
As a standard, six icebreakers are involved, but the director stated that if needed, they would be reinforced by two more.
‘The situation is stable at the moment. The water states fall on all key waterpoints upriver. Płock, Wyszogród, Kępa Polska is stabilizing. The entire upper and middle sections of the Vistula River are areas where winter climbs are possible – especially in a situation of thawing. On the Lower Visla this is possible in the case of backs. The situation is dynamic. We have a period of very hard work ahead of us. Our people monitor sensitive locations continuously. We will respond to all worrying signals" she pointed out.
Currently, ice on the Vistula is present on a section of about 112 km.
