Swedish equipment on U.S. Navy ships. Saab with new contract
Multi-purpose Sea Giraffe AMB ship radars manufactured by the Swedish defence group Saab are already a global export hit. Another order for their delivery for the US Navy is confirmation of the strong position of equipment offered by Saab on the arms market.
With the new order, the Sea Giraffe multitasking radars will be mounted in a total of five types of U.S. Navy ships. Recently Saab's defense company reported that the U.S. Navy ordered this equipment for ship-base (ESB) USNS Hershel "Woody" Williams. The contract also includes the installation of elements of the Combat Management System (CMS) 9LV in the radar control and imaging function. Such a solution will translate into an increase in situational awareness and the ability to identify its alien.
The ship, which will be equipped with Swedish Sea Giraffe radar, is under the command of the US Navy’s Military Sealift Command. President and CEO Saab Defense and Security USA Erik Smith estimates that Sea Giraffe's multitasking radar will strengthen command capability and provide him with complete situational awareness in a wide range of tasks, including during the implementation of expeditionary war operations.

– Our marine radars will now be installed on the decks of five types of U.S. Navy ships," Smith emphasises. – This order confirms a high level of trust of the American Navy to Saab as a strong partner and supplier of radar. We are proud of the fact that the U.S. Navy focuses on Saab radars, which allow the success of the mission in any marine environment during each operation," added the head of the U.S. Saab group.

Contract work will be carried out between 2018 and 2020 in Geteborg, Sweden and Syracuse, United States.
In addition to these units, the Sea Giraffe radars also feature American LCS (Littoral Combat Ship) ships. Furthermore, the Swedish defense group is working on a new version of the radar to be used by the US Naval Air Systems Command for air traffic surveillance.
Last year, the U.S. Navy chose the Sea Giraffe AMB multitasking marine radar also for the state-of-the-art OPC Coast Guard ships. Saab announced a similar order in July this year. On the basis of this, the Swedish company will provide an undisclosed number of radars on the American side. According to official information, radars are about to hit Coast Guard ships. In June, Saab reported that he had obtained another contract to supply Sea Giraffe radar. Who ordered Swedish equipment – it is unknown because this information has been classified. However, it is known that the June contract provides for the possibility to purchase another 10 radars under option law.
