Modernization of the Outer Port Road and Rail Network in the Port of Gdańsk on the semi-meter

Work on the expansion and modernization of the road-rail network of the External Port of Gdańsk is half-way – NDI informed on Thursday. The road and rail system established in the port is expected to be the facilities for the planned Central Port in the future, which allows the handling of the Port of Gdańsk to reach about 100 million tonnes per year.

The most advanced works in the railway industry, reaching 60% of planned works, 56% of progress has been achieved in the bridge industry, and 51% in the road industry. At 77 percent of the progress was assessed work in a buffer parking lot for trucks. Three overpasses are being constructed under the agreement, and prefabricated beams will be mounted on one.

The railway network leading to the DCT container terminal will be rebuilt before the deadline set in the contract.

"Before us, we have started work on the construction of the coal terminal track and on the continuation of network, bridge and road works", says project director Jacek Szymański, quoted in the communication.

As reported by the NDI, streets of a total length of 5.6 km are being rebuilt, four new overpasses will be created and two existing ones will be demolished.

The 9.4 km long road and rail system in the port, including 16 new routes, is intended to be the facilities for the planned Central Port in the future, which allows the handling of the Port of Gdańsk to reach about 100 million tonnes per year.

The External Port in the Gdańsk port is the area where all deep-water terminals are located, allowing the reception of the largest vessels arriving in Gdańsk.

The agreement for the extension and modernisation of the road and rail network of the External Port in Gdańsk port was signed in July on the Management Board of the Maritime Port of Gdańsk S.A. The value of the investment is around PLN 176 million, of which 85 percent is co-financing from the European Union. The work is carried out by NDI S.A., selected by tender. The project is to be implemented by the end of 2020.

As part of the project, the communication system in the External Port will be changed, including the streets of Portowa, Poinca, Container and Construction of the Northern Port. There will be an additional track for DCT terminal, new coal terminal tracks and a modern rail traffic control system. Additionally, there will be a small buffer parking for trucks, the first in this part of the port.
