USS Gerald R. Ford visits Italy

On September 17, US Navy's newest and largest aircraft carrier, USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78), along with an Arleigh Burke, USS Ramage (DDG 61), entered a picturesque port in Trieste, Italy. These impressive units are part of the Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group Task Force – one of the most important and most advanced US Navy operational formations, whose main goal is to carry out complex missions on the open sea.

The arrival of this impressive aircraft carrier to Europe demonstrates the importance of NATO's alliance in the context of increasing tensions in the region, especially due to the situation in Ukraine. Ford has a displacement of 100,000 tons and dimensions of 337.1, 41 m wide and 12 m submerged. It is powered by two atomic reactors and four drive shafts, reaching speeds of over 30 knots. It is equipped with defence systems such as Mk15 Phalanx or Mk49 RAM. The permanent crew has 4,297 people, including 508 officers.
