Navantia begins the replacement of propulsors on the landing party Juan Carlos I

Spanish landing helicopter Juan Carlos I (L 61), flagship Armada Española, July 17 entered Navantia shipyard in Puerto Real. Within the next six months, the unit will undergo comprehensive modernization of the propulsion system, including the replacement of two MO1800 azimutual propulsors, and the revision and modernisation of selected on-board systems.

Repair work of the helicopter propulsion system Juan Carlos I

The scope of the works focuses on the replacement of two azimutal propulsors, which have caused technical problems since the beginning of operation. Vibrations moving to the hull structure and incidents associated with the automatic shutdown of the drive contributed to the replacement decision. The new modules of the MO1800 type will be supplied by ABB. Five-shell screws with fixed stroke, diameter 5 meters and unit weight 150 tonnes will be used. The propulsor power, according to the original configuration, will remain at 11 MW.

The work will force three main cuts in the hull and the preparation of new assembly blocks for azipods. In addition, planned installation of new voltage converters, modernization of the power cooling system and replacement of about 40 kilometres of cable installation. All of this will be integrated into the new version of the IPMS (Integrated Platform Management System) surveillance and control system.

Scope of work

The technical review also envisages the revision and renovation of major diesel engines. The modernization will also include the air conditioning and ventilation system (HVAC), as well as the modification of the control consoles on the navigating bridge. After dismantling, the equipment will be adequately secured with a view to its possible use on another ship.

The modernisation process is implemented under a previously concluded agreement worth EUR 30 million and is the result of more than three years of preparation, including project work and purchase of components. The replacement of the drive is expected to improve the maneuverability of the unit and allow a slightly higher maximum speed.

The importance of the ship to the Spanish Armada Española

Ship Juan Carlos I remains the largest war unit in the history of the Spanish fleet. Designed as a landing helicopter with the ability to serve as a light aircraft carrier, he replaced two types of older ships in service – Príncipe de Asturias (R 11) and landing vessel Pizarro (L 42). He is still supported by Type Ships in landing operations Galicia.

The full buoyancy vessel of 27 000 tonnes and 230.82 metres is equipped with an aircraft deck with a 12° angle jump and a landing dock that houses four LCM-type barges. In the alternative configuration, the unit may take on board a LCAC type landing hovercraft.

The modifications introduced are intended to ensure full operational readiness for the next two decades, strengthening the projection potential of the Armada Española force.
