The F110 program ahead of schedule. F113 frigates

At the Navantii shipyard in Ferrol, a keel was laid for a future frigate Menéndez de Avilés (F113), third of the five ships built under the F110 programme for the Spanish Armada Española. This stage of work was achieved seven months before the deadline in the contract.

Location of the keel It was to place Block 212 on the number 2 slipway. Before that there was the first frigate of this series – the future Bonifaz (F111).

The hull assembly thus started will continue on the ramp until the ship is launched. Navantia points out that reaching this stage seven months in advance confirms the maintenance of the timetable agreed with the Spanish Defence Ministry.

The ceremony was chaired by the Director-General for Arms and Materials Admiral Aniceto Rosique and the President of Navantii Ricardo Domínguez. The event was also attended by Chief of Staff of the Navy of Spain Admiral Antonio Piñeiro.

She's here. Bonifaz prepared for marine trials

The most advanced frigate of the F110 program, came Bonifaz, located at pier 10. On the ship, the main systems are installed and started before the sea trials begin.

The next steps will be the launch of the IPMS system, responsible for the management of ship equipment, and the installation of the SPY-7 radar. The transfer of the frigate to the Navy of Spain is scheduled for 2028.

Roger de Lauria before launching

The second ship of this series, Roger de Lauria (F112), is mounted on ramp 3. The construction of the essential hull structure, which includes the bow block, has already been completed.

The mast assembly remains to be performed. The frigate is being prepared to launch, planned for the end of the summer. Work has already begun in the yard before this stage of construction.

Four F110 frigates in different construction phases

Navantia also began work on the frigate Luis de Córdova (F114). Its construction is currently in the initial stage.

Work on the fourth ship coincided with the launch of a new vessel block production facility in Ferrol. The facility is currently undergoing receptions and is announced to achieve full production capacity in the coming weeks.

This means that Navantia carries out a parallel construction of four frigate F110. The individual ships are located in different stages – from the preparation of blocks, through the assembly of the hull on the ramp, to the equipping of the unit already on the water.

F110 frigates for Spanish Navy

F110 are multi-purpose escort frigates intended for action in high-intense conflicts. The project has been developed with a particular focus on combating submarines, as well as air defense and combating water targets.

Ships are also expected to respond to conventional and asymmetric hazards and perform maritime safety tasks. Five F110 frigates will replace six F80 units Santa María, being a Spanish version of the American type Oliver Hazard Perry.

F110 is the second generation of modern frigates designed in Spain and using the Aegis combat system. Their construction is intended to increase the capabilities of the Spanish Navy and at the same time develop the competences of the national shipbuilding industry.
