Navantia will invest €4.3 billion for the construction of five frigates for the Spanish fleet

On 29 March, the Spanish Council of Ministers decided to approve the financing of the construction of five new F-110 frigates for the Navy of that country. The accepted amount amounted to €4.3 billion and the contractor of the programme is to be the Spanish shipbuilding company Navantia.
The first F-110 type unit is to be delivered in 2026 and the last five years later. Production should start in May of this year.

The F-110 frigates will replace Santa Maria type units serving in the Spanish Navy since 1986. The ships will be equipped with a new version of the SCOMBA battlefield management system created by Navantia and modern S-band radar developed by the Spanish electronic company Indra in collaboration with the American defense company Lockheed Martin.

New Spanish ships will be able to perform both open and coastal operations. Their design will be optimised to reduce the number of crews and reduce life cycle costs. Navantia engineers focused on ship survival (a reduced probability of detection and ability to survive attacks and thus complete the mission). The new frigates are to be capable of combating various types of targets: air, underwater (using the CAPTAS-4 sonar from Thales), water, and electronic combat. The F-110 is to be equipped with modular mission hangar, which is now standard for modern submarines of this size.
The F-110 frigates will measure 145 metres long and have a displacement of 6 100 tons. Their weaponry will include: 127 mm main cannon, missile anti-ship missiles, torpedo launchers, two 30 mm caliber guns and a vertical launcher for anti-aircraft missiles.
