German Polish Navy one milestone ahead of MW RP

The German government has recently formulated the interests, principles and main areas of German policy in the Indo-Pacific region. The new guidelines are also a contribution to the European Union's overall strategy for this region, reported the German Ministry of Defence on 2 September.

In order to play a significant role in the international arena, Poland cannot afford further years of negligence both in the context of the defence of the Polish Coast and a disrespectful approach to Polish shipping. It's time not only to think, but also to take action towards the revival of the Polish Navy, because today, in the era of the development of international players' interests, among others, in the Indo-Pacific region, it is a situation without precedent to occur internationally. In a few years, Poland will not have the chance to participate in the formation of maritime international trade, remaining in stalemate as it is today.

Meanwhile, the new guidelines of the German Ministry of Defence provide a strategic framework for German political action in the Indo-Pacific region. "With the development of Asia, political and economic weight is increasingly moving to the Indo-Pacific region. The region will become the key to shaping international order in the 21st century " – they are calling for new guidelines.

This is why Germany must also prepare to expand its involvement in security policy. The Ministry of Defence thus played a key role under the auspices of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the preparation of this interministerial document.

From the point of view of the MON, the issue of peace and security, including free sea routes, is of particular importance. The German Government intends to extend its commitment to security policy in the Indo-Pacific region. In addition to expanding cooperation on security and defence policy with partners in the region, defensive policy contacts in the region are to be stepped up. This includes, for example, participation in exercises.

"The time has come for Germany to defend its interests more vigorously," emphasised German defense minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer in her opening speech on security policy at Munich Federal Armed Forces University last year. Alliances and partners would expectthat Germany will take the initiative, give impetus and show options," said the Minister. With the measures adopted, this approach is reflected in the official guidelines of the Federal Government. These are contact points and offers to expand cooperation in the region.

With a view to partners in the Indo-Pacific region, Minister Kramp-Karrenbauer already campaigned in Munich last year to increase her presence in the region with allies. "Because we want to ensure respect for the applicable law," said the Minister.

For the record, the German Navy frigate Hamburg type Sachsen/F124 was to perform this yearA five-month mission in Indo-Pacific waters, including the island of Reunion and Australia. However, due to COVID-19 this action was postponed. Instead, the frigate took part in EUNAVFOR MED IRINI operations in the Mediterranean in early August.
