Northvolt will build in Gdańsk the largest energy storage plant in Europe and employ 500 people

Northvolt, whose mission is to ensure the future of energy, increases its production and R & D capacity, thanks to a $200 million expansion in Gdańsk. The new plant, which will start operating in 2022, will be established at the Pomeranian Investment Centre. It will have an initial annual production capacity of 5 GWh and potential future productivity of 12 GWh.

Battery modules and energy storage facilities will be created in the factory, enabling greater and better use of renewable energy sources. Products from Northvolt factory in Gdańsk will also be used in industry, for example electric mining vehicles. On the basis of lithium-ion cells, supplied from the Gigafactory Northvolt Ett in Skellefteå in northern Sweden and other components supplied by selected manufacturers, complete battery systems will be produced.

"This is a strategic investment for Poland and unprecedented in the region in the most modern plant with a high degree of automation and digitization of processes. It is also a significant step towards independent industry from fossil fuels and allowing the use of increasing amounts of renewable energy by society," said Robert Chryc-Gawrychowski, President of the Board of Northvolt Poland.

The new facility will be built at the Pomeranian Investment Centre, near the Port of Gdańsk and the container terminal DCT. The port location will have a positive impact on the European supply chain, and the proximity of the Tri-urban agglomeration with a mature labour market and an extensive higher and vocational education system will provide access to high-class specialists and engineers. Northvolt Poland plans to cooperate closely with universities and secondary and vocational schools in the region.

"It is important for us that innovative production and R & D processes will be carried out at the modern Northvolt factory in Gdańsk with the participation of the people of Gdańsk, as well as support from Gdańsk universities,   Technical University of Gdańsk or University of Gdańsk".

"The battery industry is now one of the fastest growing industries. In Europe, the sale of electric cars is steadily increasing, with the demand for modern energy storage systems behind it. After investments such as LG Chem near Wrocław or Daimler in Jawor, another significant project from the electromobility sector will be implemented in Pomerania. Northvolt is an excellent example that our region is an excellent location for large industrial projects thanks to the competitive advantage that the presence of seaports allows to optimize the supply chain" - commented Mieczysław Struk, Marshal of the Pomeranian Voivodeship.
