New heart of ORP Mamry – completion of modernization in PGZ War Shipyard [Part 1]

PGZ Stocznia Wojenna, together with the partners of the consortium, she transferred the ORP trawler to the Polish Navy in March Mamry - Ten days ahead of schedule. This is the third unit whose modernization was carried out by a consortium of Polish Armed Forces Group and two shipyard companies: Nauta S.A. Shiprepair Yard and PZZ War Shipyard.

Although the topic of upgrading the ORP Mamry already sounded in the media space, the transfer of the unit before the assumed date – and in such a detailed form – deserves a reminder. We decided to look at this project in detail – from the perspective of the Gdynia shipyard, which has been managed by a person who has been involved in the construction of ships for years and supporting the Polish Navy. Currently responsible for rebuilding the position PGZ Naval Shipyard as a reliable contractor of modernization programs for MW RP.

Key modernization of the trawlers MW RP in PGZ Shipyard

ORP Mamry is one of the four units of the 207 project, which underwent a comprehensive renovation of the gym as part of the ship fleet modernization program for the Polish Navy. The scope of the changes included the replacement of the main drive for modern MTU motors 8V2000M72, the installation of new power generators, automation and navigation systems, as well as the installation of the Integrated Communication System SVT and MHS Hermes.

The redevelopment of this unit was one of the most demanding tasks we have done in recent years. This is the result of the great effort of the whole team and the testimony of changes that occur in the PGZ of the Shipyard. ORP Mamry it's a better unit in every way today.

Marcin Ryngwelski, President of the Polish Naval Shipyard

The conclusions of earlier modernization work carried out on other ships of this type enabled to optimize the process and better adapt technical solutions to the operational realities of the Polish Navy.

Rebuilding the gym to ORP Mamry This is the result of lessons learned from earlier modernisation of trawlers of this type. This gave us a more reliable unit, modern and adapted to modern operating requirements.

Radosław Koc, Production Director at PGZ War Shipyard

Therefore, the ORP Mamry became the fourth unit of the 207P/207M project to receive a new drive. This is an important reinforcement for Polish antimine forces and an important step towards further modernization of this war fleet segment in PGZ SW.

Repair and technical details

Modernisation of the ORP Mamry She covered much more than just replacing the gym. The renovation work was comprehensive and concerned all major on-board systems. The process began with the complete dismantling of equipment, systems and full equipment of the unit – up to the level of the empty hull.

After a detailed verification of the technical condition of the unit, repair of all the revealed damages of the laminated hull was performed. These works included both the outer hull and superstructures, exterior decks and interior surfaces that had previously been cleared of insulation layers and adhesive residues.

Modernisation of such a large extent posed a huge challenge for both the Design Office and the production of our Shipyard. By listing all the most important devices and systems, we had to meet our Client's expectations about the functionality of the ship and its purpose during service in the sea.

Radosław Koc, Production Director at PGZ War Shipyard

All handles, mountings and foundations for new equipment have been replaced, as well as full dismantling and assembly of hull reinforcements, as required for newly designed systems. The whole cable installation and switchgear are also comprehensively listed. As part of the work, the centering of the shaft line and the entire drive system was also performed.

Among the most labour-intensive preparatory actions were the construction of new foundations for transport cranes and cannons Sparrow 2, as well as carrying frames in gyms with a set of shock absorbers. These structures provide resistance to static and impact loads. The crew's living conditions were also improved – the unit was equipped with a fresh water system, a new galley and remodeled living cabins. The ship has received also an ice-cold cold store complying with sanitary requirements, as well as new fresh water and fecal tanks. All these changes significantly increased the unit's operational autonomy.

The whole set of deck equipment related to the traction – hydraulic winches, rope, cable and complete guide rollers, which are responsible for the correct run of the lifting ropes, has also been upgraded.

All newly installed equipment, including main engines, generating sets, air compressors, ice water generator air conditioning system, fire-extinguishing agent tanks, transformer, fire and bilge pumps, as well as fuel filtration module, have been subjected to magnetization testing. This was designed to properly design new UD loops. At the same time, the system was modernised, including complete replacement of connection boxes, tubular casings and a significant part of specialized wiring.

Special weapons systems have also been renovated and calibrated, as well as a ship's combat system, a filtration system and a contamination detection and neutralisation system. The ship features a new GTR set and newly designed control panels, fully adapted for new technical equipment. Completion of equipment and integration of all new systems opened the way for the launch and technical tests.

After completion of own trials, ORP Mamry passed about a 40-day cycle of port trials of HAT and sea SAT, scheduled for 150 hours of operation of the unit under sea conditions. The completion of the tests confirmed the full technical readiness of all upgraded systems. The ship returned to service as a unit thoroughly rebuilt and adapted to the modern operational requirements of the Polish Navy.
