NYK reveals plans to build twelve LNG fuel tankers

The Japanese shipping company NYK announced plans to build twelve vehicles (PCTC) powered by LNG fuel, the delivery of which will start in 2025.

The company revealed on Tuesday the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Shin Kurushima Dockyard Co., Ltd. and Nihon Shipyard Co. Ltd. on the successive construction of ships split equally between both shipyards. The shipyards are expected to start returning units from 2025 to 2028.

The NYK believes that these plans are in line with the objective of complementing the fleet and protecting the environment, which is to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 50% per tonne-kilometre of transport by 2050. The use of LNG and hull modifications will reduce carbon dioxide emissions from fuel by about 40% compared to ships using conventional heavy diesel.

NYK's automotive transport department promotes LNG fuel for its PCTC, starting with the delivery of the fueled LNG Sakura Leader in 2020. The company already has solid plans to launch eight PCTCs powered by LNG by 2024.

Thanks to the construction of cars, this figure will increase to 20 PCTC powered LNG by 2028, and the total value of the investment will be about 200 billion yen. Since 2030, NYK has plans to build hydrogen and ammonia powered ships.

Each of the 12 ships will measure slightly below 200 metres in length and will have a total car capacity between 6,800 and 7,000 vehicles.
