From the entrance of the U.S. Navy destroyers to the Ormuz Strait and its unlocking still a long way away

The passage of two U.S. Navy missile destroyers through the Ormuz Strait does not yet mean a rapid return to normal shipping. Ships opened the first stage of action, but the real unlocking of the trail will only be possible if the mine hazard is removed.

We wrote about the American destroyers crossing the Ormuz Strait yesterday on our portal. Now it is worth looking at it from a broader perspective and asking whether real actions to unlock the trail will follow this demonstration. This is where the major problem begins.

The entrance to the Strait is only the first step

The Americans have shown that they are ready to enter one of the world's most vulnerable waters and begin preparatory activities. According to the communications, it's about devising safe passage and create conditions to resume ship movement. The mere passage of two destroyers through Ormuz does not solve the problem of mines.

Units of this class may cover the operation, mark the presence and respond to threats from water or air targets. However, they are not intended for tedious checking and cleaning of water tracks. Their entry into Ormuz means an attempt to start efforts to restore shipping rather than a quick solution to the problem. From this to the real unlocking of the trail, however, still a very long way.

Withdrawal of Avenger-type mine destroyers from the Middle East

Until September 2025, Bahrain was stationed Avenger type mine destroyers, owned by the American fleet. Over the years, they have been the primary tool of the U.S. Navy for antimine activities in the Persian Gulf. However, the last of these units was withdrawn from service and new capabilities developed on LCS ships and unmanned systems were to take place.

This is an important change, because today the U.S. Navy enters Ormuz without classic mine vessels, which for years have been a natural means of action in such an environment. Instead, Americans rely on modular systems, sonar systems and unmanned submarines and submarines. This direction of change has been known for several years, but what is different is the exercises and modernisation assumptions, and what is different is the real crisis on water that is crucial for global oil and LNG trade.

Mines are still the most serious problem

Recent reports indicate that at least a dozen mins have been detected in the Strait. This shows that the problem is not just a political dimension. Even if the tension temporarily weakens, the mere presence of mines can reduce ship traffic for a long time, raise insurance costs and increase shipowners' risks.

From a market point of view, it is not only the entrance of two destroyers into Ormuz. It is important that the United States and its partners are able to identify and maintain a safe corridor for commercial shipping within a reasonable time. It's a much harder task than just entering the Strait.

Symbolic movement, more difficult practice

Contrary to the first impressions, we are not yet dealing with a simple story about unlocking this trail. Rather, it is the beginning of an operation whose success depends not only on the presence of American ships, but also on the real antimine capabilities, time and further developments on the Iranian side.

The United States has shown that it does not intend to step down the field in Ormuz Strait. However, this is only the first stage of a much more difficult battle to unlock the Strait of Ormuz, because between the entrance of ships to the strait and the restoration of conditions in which shipowners consider this route to be truly safe, there is a long, risky and uncertain road.
