In Cartagena shipyard work on submarine S-82 is coming to an end Narciso Monturiol, second ship from the S-80 program for the Spanish Armada Española. Completion of the construction phase The launch ceremony will take place a month later (July) – although the specific date has not yet been approved by the Spanish Ministry of Defence.

Completion of plant testing and preparation for marine trials

The launch of plant tests in March of this year and the launch of port tests confirmed the readiness of on-board systems and weapons Narciso Monturiol. As has been demonstrated, the submarine is currently in the port testing phase (HAT), during which power systems, on-board installations and the ability of devices to operate under conditions simulating operation are checked.

After the integration of weapons and plant tests has been successfully completed, the ship will be launched, followed by further port tests (HAT). These will include, inter alia, starting of batteries and diesel engines – verification of charging, voltage alignment and regulation of the stability of the power supply parameters. After positive attempts, the ship will go out into the sea, starting sea tests (SAT) – initially operating on the surface to then realize the first dive according to the marine testing programme.

The visit of Admiral General Teodoro López Calderón, Chief of Defence Staff, at the naval base in Cartagena at the end of June aims to determine the details of the event, including the selection of the godmother of the ship.

Experience with prototype S-81 reduces launching time

Experience gained during the construction and launch of the prototype Isaac Peral have optimised the next stages of implementation of the programme. Better crew preparation, the standards of assembly developed and the knowledge of key shipbuilding operations translate into a shortening of the time needed to complete the final shipbuilding work.

According to the schedule, Narciso Monturiol is to be handed over to the Spanish Navy in mid-2026, while full operational readiness is planned for the second half of 2027.

Combat firing debut on S-81

Parallel unit S-81 Isaac Peral participate in the Sinkex 25 exercise, carried out in the waters around the Canary Islands. During the exercise, the ship made its debut torpedo shooting, hitting decommissioned vessels acting as targets. The exercises are also attended by Spanish Air Force – F-18 fighters and Eurofighters.

The change of command on the S-81 is planned for the coming months – kmdr Lt. Fernando Clavijo is expected to assume his duties after his predecessor, continuing the process of achieving full combat readiness.
