Orizzonte Sistemi Navali with order for the fourth OPV

Orizzonte Sistemi Navali (OSN), joint venture company Fincantieri and Leonardo (51% and 49% respectively), received an order to build the fourth OPV for the Italian Navy (MM) under the Offshore Patrol Vessel program. The value of this transaction, including logistical support, is approximately EUR 236 million.

Orizzonte Sistemi Navali prepares to conclude subcontracts, giving the relevant tasks to Fincantieri and Leonardo, worth approximately EUR 163 million and EUR 70 million respectively. The agreement with Fincantieri is crucial for cooperation with a related entity. The transaction with Leonardo, although less in value, remains in accordance with applicable rules and procedures for transactions with subsidiaries. Both transactions meet the legal requirements, which allows the use of procedural exemptions.

The OPV programme plays a strategic role in the modernisation and expansion of the Italian Navy fleet, adapting it to the requirements of modern naval operations. It aims to strengthen the capacity to carry out patrol missions, maritime surveillance, the protection of communication routes and the prevention of threats such as marine pollution.

New units, measuring about 95 metres and displacing 2,300 tons, will be able to accommodate 97 crew members on board. These ships will be distinguished by advanced technological solutions, automation and exceptional maneuverability, allowing them to operate effectively in various tactical and weather conditions.

One of the most important innovative elements of the new OPV is the advanced work station (the cockpit). It was developed for multi-tasking marine patrol units for Marina Militarye (PPA) which is based on breakthrough technological requirements. An integrated workstation, created jointly by Leonardo and Fincantieri NexTech, allows operations to be conducted both at sea and in the air with a minimum number of operators – pilot and co-pilot, who will take over the role of watch officer of the bridge and captain. From this advanced station it is possible to manage key ship systems, including machines, rudders and selected weapons system functions.

The development of new OPV patrol units is a strategic step for the Italian Navy towards modernization. With advanced technology and high construction standards, these ships will be able to meet various operational requirements, ranging from the protection of the exclusive economic zone to activities related to the protection of the marine environment. The choice of Orizzonte Sistemi Navali confirms their position as a leader of innovation in maritime technology, while raising expectations for future advanced solutions.
