PAC-3 MSE for Arleigh Burke destroyers. US Navy is preparing a new layer of defense

Polish Navy The U.S. wants to bring PAC-3 MSE missiles aboard missile destroyers of type Arleigh Burke. The budget proposal for fiscal year 2027 includes the purchase of 405 such effectors to cooperate with Mk 41 launchers and the Aegis combat system.

The scale of the planned purchase shows that the program ceases to be just a development venture. By Naval News still in the budget proposal on the FY2026 US Navy provided for the acquisition of only 12 PAC-3 MSE missiles. We are now talking about 405 copies, and thus a clear increase in both the ambition of the programme itself and the resources allocated to its implementation.

Another step towards integration with Aegis

The integration of these missiles with ships has been ongoing for several years. They include both the adaptation of the PAC-3 MSE to firing from the Mk 41 vertical launcher and ensuring cooperation with the Aegis naval combat system. In May 2024 an attempt was made to launch, which confirmed that the program had already gone beyond the initial stage of the assumptions.

In practice, it is not about replacing Standard family missiles but about complementing the already existing missile defense of destroyers US Navy. The PAC-3 MSE would strengthen the capabilities of destroyers in particular in combating threats in the final flight phase.

For now, however, caution is needed. The current document remains a budgetary proposal for the administration, not an approved purchasing programme. The final shape of the order will depend on the decision of Congress. At the same time, however, the industry is increasing its production capacity, which shows that the case is being taken seriously.
