Pope Francis, through the Dicastery of Integral Human Development, decided to financially help all the families of crew members of the Gulf Livestock 1 ship, which sank on September 2, near the Japanese island of Amami Ōshima.

Financial assistance, in cooperation with Apostolic Nunciatures and Stella Maris from the Philippines, Australia and New Zealand, will be given personally to the missing families, along with a personal gift from Francis. The Pope wants to express his closeness and solidarity with the families of the victims.

Gulf Livestock 1 was a so-called livestock ship, or livestock transport ship, sailed on 14 August from Napier, New Zealand with the transport of nearly 6,000 head of cattle and 43 crew members on board. The transport was heading for Jingtang port in Tangshan, China. During the typhoon he went missing in the East China Sea near Okinawa. However, he managed to signal SOS around the western part of Amami Oshima Island in southwest Japan.
