The European Parliament adopted a resolution on chemical weapons sunk in the Baltic Sea

Eurodeputowani przyjęli we wtorek rezolucję wzywającą Unię Europejską do oczyszczenia Morza Bałtyckiego z wraków statków i broni chemicznej z okresu II wojny światowej. Problem można rozwiązać tylko dzięki współpracy rządów państw członkowskich, UE i NATO – skomentował jeden z autorów rezolucji europoseł PiS Kosma Złotowski.
Inicjatywa, którego pomysłodawcami byli europosłowie PiS Kosma Złotowski i Anna Fotyga, poparło 660 europosłów, przy ośmiu głosach sprzeciwu i 25 wstrzymujących się.
„Parlament Europejski, przyjmując tę rezolucję, potwierdził, że problem broni chemicznej zalegającej na dnie Bałtyku ma wymiar międzynarodowy i może zostać rozwiązany tylko dzięki współpracy rządów krajowych, Unii Europejskiej i NATO. Potrzebne są oczywiście środki finansowe oraz badania nad technologiami bezpiecznego usuwania i utylizacji szkodliwych substancji z dna morskiego” – oznajmił Złotowski.
He reminded that countries such as Poland and the Baltic countries had been forced to look for solutions for themselves for a long time, even though pollution of the Baltic was the result of political decisions by the Allied and military forces occupying the region.
"It is Russia and Germany that bear the greatest responsibility for the current state of affairs, and it is from these governments that we expect greater commitment. The Baltic Sea has great economic potential, which cannot be fully exploited without clearing the bottom of ammunition, wrecks full of fuel or tanks with chemical weapons. This is a serious challenge, among other things, for the construction of wind farms. I hope that this resolution, adopted by a large majority and above political divisions, will motivate the European Commission to find additional means to clear the bottom of the Baltic", added the Euro MP.
