PGE wants to use the potential of Polish companies to build offshore

The construction of wind farms in the Baltic Sea creates an opportunity for Polish companies, for the acquisition of new specialist competences, says Wojciech Dąbrowski, President of the Polish Energy Group.

"We are talking to more than 100 companies that will be interested in offering in our [trading] proceedings. Polish companies specialize in the construction of transformer stations, steel constructions, concrete constructions, towers that will be more than 200 metres high" - said Dąbrowski during the panel on "Congress 590". ISBnews is the media patron of this event.

Such towers will require specialized transport, hence the potential construction of ships by Polish shipyards – at least two such ships will be needed.

"There will also be a need to build ships for servicing. PGE estimates that it will need several such ships," the President pointed out.

According to Dąbrowski, investments in offshore and land wind energy can become one of the impulses to stimulate the Polish economy after the pandemic, and the implementation should be made as far as possible to Polish companies.

"In the UK, at the beginning of the investment in windmills at sea, the share of domestic companies was 20%. PGE would like it to be higher than 20%, but it requires work with performers," added the president.

He also indicated that investments should be prepared transparently, so the company informs everyone in advance of the planned activities.

The next big meeting with contractors is soon to be organized, where everyone will be able to learn about investment plans. The aim is that Polish companies can prepare and offer their competences in the future.

PGE also argued that the solution for the Polish economy would be to locate a wind turbine factory in Poland.

In February 2021, PGE and Ørsted signed a 50/50 joint venture agreement to develop, build and operate Baltica 3 and 2 offshore wind farms projects through special purpose companies. Depending on the closure of joint venture transactions and on the final investment decisions of Ørsted and PGE, the first part of the Baltica project (up to 1 GW carried out by Baltica 3) will start power generation around 2026, while the second part – Baltica 2 (up to 1.5 GW) can be launched before 2030.
